Volunteer

The SpoFit is a great place to volunteer!  Our volunteers assist members and staff in order to provide the most optimal experience for participation and independence.

  • Reception volunteers help staff with numerous responsibilities, including greeting visitors and providing tours of the facility.
  • Fitness Room volunteers help make it possible for SpoFit members to be as independent as possible on the equipment. Volunteers provide support and assistance as needed. All volunteers will be trained on equipment.
  • Youth Programs volunteers have fun playing recreation games and sports with children of all ages and abilities.
  • Aquatics volunteers provide assistance to members as they transfer in and out of the pools and with equipment needs. Volunteers may also get in the pool to provide assistance.
  • Special Events and Tournaments volunteers assist with enforcing facility rules, while assisting participants and visitors in order to ensure the most optimal experience.

After we receive your application, the Volunteer Coordinator will contact you to schedule an interview. Once the interview is complete, you will be scheduled for orientation and training. Once completed, we will get you started with volunteering.

Volunteers will be asked to complete a Criminal History Self Disclosure Affidavit and Background check during orientation.

Internships

The SpoFit offers undergraduate and graduate internships in Recreation Therapy, fundraising/event management, and related fields.  Internships are 14-16 weeks in duration.  Each student will be expected to work 40 hours per week including some nights and weekends.

The intern experience will include:

  • Hands on experience with specialized, inclusive, and adaptive recreation and fitness programs.
  • Exposure to a wide range of disabilities.
  • Exposure to all aspects of the Recreation Therapy process.
  • Exposure to all aspects of recreation administration (outreach, special events, fundraising, budgeting, program development, volunteer coordination, partnership development, marketing, and public relations).
  • Preparation for the NCTRC exam.

Examples of activities interns will be exposed to, depending on the season, may include:

  • Swimming
  • Canoeing/Kayaking
  • Scuba
  • Rock Climbing
  • Court Sports
  • Fitness Classes
  • Day Camps
  • Weight Training
  • Social Recreation
  • Outdoor Recreation
  • Youth Programs

Application Deadlines:

  • Summer: March 15th
  • Fall: May 15th
  • Winter/Spring: December 15th
